Tripura Forges Ahead with Earthquake-Resilient Infrastructure, Targets ₹7,000 Crore Boost
Agartala: Tripura is embarking on an ambitious infrastructure transformation, spearheaded by the construction of a cutting-edge multi-storeyed office complex designed with advanced earthquake-resilient technology.
Chief Minister Manik Saha announced the development on Friday, July 18, during a seminar on infrastructure in the Northeast, organised by the Indian Building Congress, underscoring the state’s commitment to modern and safe development.
The Chief Minister highlighted the significant technical innovation driving this project, acknowledging the region’s seismic vulnerability. He revealed that the upcoming 14-storey office building at Gurkhabasti is being constructed using state-of-the-art base isolation technology, specifically a triple friction pendulum system. This advanced engineering is designed to allow the structure to withstand earthquakes up to a formidable 8.5 on the Richter scale, ensuring both administrative efficiency by consolidating various government departments under one roof and paramount structural safety.
Further reinforcing the state’s developmental thrust, Dr. Saha declared an unprecedented allocation of ₹7,000 crore for infrastructure development in this year’s state budget. This substantial investment aims to significantly upgrade Tripura’s connectivity network. Plans include linking all district and sub-divisional headquarters with national highways, thereby enhancing accessibility across the state. In a major upgrade, 256 aging bally bridges are slated for conversion into durable RCC concrete bridges, promising long-term stability and improved transportation.
In a move to alleviate urban congestion and boost regional mobility, a 449-kilometre ring road project has been proposed for the Agartala area under the central government’s Bharat Mala scheme. This project is expected to streamline traffic flow in and around the capital. On the national highway front, Tripura currently boasts 923 kilometres of national highways, with an additional 229 kilometres awaiting final approval. Of the existing network, an impressive 509 kilometres have already been upgraded to double-lane capacity, reflecting the ongoing efforts to enhance road infrastructure.
Addressing the growing needs of urban traffic, a new flyover is also under construction in Agartala, connecting the bustling Radhanagar area to the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital. This is anticipated to significantly ease commuter woes in the city.
Chief Minister Saha concluded by crediting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s transformative leadership for the remarkable development witnessed across the Northeast. He particularly emphasised Tripura’s unique strategic geographic advantage, citing its proximity to Bangladesh and increasing railway integration with the rest of India, which positions the state as a crucial gateway for fostering trade connectivity with Southeast Asia.
