Assam: Kokrajhar Readies for Durand Cup Extravaganza
Guwahati: Kokrajhar, often lauded as Assam’s “football city,” is buzzing with excitement as it prepares to host the historic Durand Cup Football Tournament for the third time. The Indian Oil 134th edition of Asia’s oldest football competition is set to kick off at the SAI Stadium on July 27, promising a grand spectacle for football enthusiasts.
The prestigious event is a collaborative effort between the Indian Army and the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) Government, underscoring a strong partnership for sports promotion in the region. Preparations are in full swing, with security forces and army personnel meticulously working to ensure a seamless and secure tournament. The inaugural ceremony on July 27 is anticipated to be a vibrant affair, showcasing a rich tapestry of cultural performances and exhibitions that reflect the spirit of Assam.
Dignitaries confirmed to grace the opening ceremony include Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, BTR Chief Executive Member Pramod Boro, and senior officials from the Indian Army, highlighting the significance of the tournament for the state.
The Kokrajhar leg of the tournament will feature four competitive teams: local favourites Bodoland FC, along with Punjab FC, ITBP FT (Indo-Tibetan Border Police Football Team), and Karbi Anglong Morning Star. The first match on July 27 will see ITBP FT go head-to-head with Karbi Anglong Morning Star. A total of six league matches are scheduled between July 27 and August 12, culminating in a quarter-final match on August 16.
Dr. Sangrang Brahma, General Secretary of the Assam Football Association, expressed immense pride in Kokrajhar’s consistent role as a hub for football and extended gratitude to all stakeholders for their invaluable support in elevating the tournament’s stature. The return of the Durand Cup to Kokrajhar is seen as a significant stride in fostering sports development and passion in India’s northeastern region.
