Assam: Nagaon Gears Up for Major Eviction Drive in Hatichong
Nagaon, Assam – The Nagaon district administration is poised to commence a significant eviction drive in the Hatichong Mouza, a move that closely follows the government’s recent efforts to clear encroachments in Uriamghat, Golaghat. The impending operation targets substantial illegal occupations across two key areas within Hatichong.
An official notification, issued by the Nagaon Sadar Revenue Circle Officer, specifies the focus of the drive: Garoi Mari Pathar Kichamator’s Government Grazing Reserve No. 72, and Bogoriguri Pam Kichamator’s Government Grazing Reserves No. 62 and 63. These tracts of government-designated grazing land have reportedly been subject to extensive encroachment, with allegations surfacing of multi-storied structures being illegally constructed and unauthorised pond excavations carried out by individuals described as being of questionable background.
The late-night issuance of the eviction notice has reportedly sent ripples of fear and tension through the local settler communities, many of whom now face the stark reality of imminent displacement from their homes and livelihoods.
Sources close to the administration suggest that this operation is not an isolated incident but rather a segment of a much larger, statewide initiative aimed at reclaiming government land. The focus, in particular, is on Village and Professional Grazing Reserves (VGRs and PGRs) which have been under illegal occupation for extended periods.
Authorities have confirmed that law enforcement agencies will be deployed in force during the eviction proceedings to ensure the drive is carried out peacefully and without any obstruction. The administration has also appealed to the residents to extend their full cooperation to the authorities and to vacate the encroached land voluntarily, in a bid to avert forceful eviction and potential legal repercussions.
