Jaiswal’s Blistering Fifty Puts India in Command, Erasing First Innings Deficit on Day 2

DHARAMSHALA: A sparkling half-century from the young sensation Yashasvi Jaiswal ensured India wrestled back control on a pulsating Day 2 of the fifth and final Test against England. The hosts ended the day at 75 for 2, establishing a crucial 52-run lead after having earlier conceded a slim first-innings deficit.

Jaiswal, in his characteristic flamboyant style, raced to an unbeaten 51, showcasing a fearless approach that belied the pressure of a tricky chase. His positive strokeplay was the highlight of India’s second innings as he single-handedly dismantled England’s early hopes after they had managed to secure a 23-run lead. India had a shaky start, losing openers KL Rahul for 7, who was removed by a sharp delivery from Josh Tongue, and Sai Sudharsan for 11, falling to Gus Atkinson. However, Jaiswal stood tall, his bat doing all the talking as he blunted the English attack and pushed the scoreboard forward at a brisk pace.

The day began with England resuming their first innings at a precarious position and they were eventually bowled out for 247, powered by gritty half-centuries from Zak Crawley (64) and Harry Brook (53). Indian pacers Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna were the stars with the ball, picking up four wickets each, keeping the deficit in check. As the sun set over the picturesque HPCA Stadium, Jaiswal and night watchman Akash Deep (4 not out) walked back to the pavilion, their partnership poised to extend India’s advantage on Day 3. The match is finely poised, but with Jaiswal in such fine fettle, the momentum firmly rests with the home side.
