Assam Driver Caught in Tawang After On-the-Run ATM Card Theft

Guwahati: A driver who allegedly stole his employer’s ATM card and withdrew a significant amount of money from various locations has been arrested in Tawang, bringing an end to a month-long manhunt. The accused, Kinto Basumatary, had been using multiple fake identities to evade law enforcement since the theft was reported in mid-June.

The theft came to light on June 19, when a formal complaint was lodged at the Papu Hills Police Station in Itanagar. A case was promptly registered under Section 305(a) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. An investigation led by Sub-Inspector A.K. Jha tracked Basumatary’s movements, revealing he had been using aliases such as Rahul Diamary and Nishanta Swargiary while on the run. He was known to have moved between Balipara, Bana, and a construction site near Madhuri Lake in Tawang.

Acting on a critical tip-off and with the support of Tawang Police, a team headed by Deputy Superintendent of Police Tasso Kato located and apprehended Basumatary at Tawang Market while he was out to buy fuel. He was then taken into custody and handed over to the investigating officer for further proceedings.

Superintendent of Police, ICR Naharlagun, Dr. Nyelam Nega, commented on the case, stressing the importance of conducting thorough background checks on employees. He advised the public to be vigilant and refrain from sharing sensitive financial details with domestic staff or others. The police have also issued a public alert, urging residents to report any suspicious activity to their nearest police station to help prevent similar crimes and protect themselves from fraud.
