Congress Vows to Reclaim ‘Grabbed’ Land, Redistribute to Assam’s Poor

GUWAHATI: In a powerful assertion of political intent, Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi has thrown down the gauntlet, pledging that a future Congress government would reclaim all land allegedly “illegally” occupied by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his cabinet colleagues.

Gogoi, speaking after the Extended Executive Meeting of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee in Guwahati, declared that these lands would be redistributed to the state’s impoverished population if the Congress sweeps back to power in the 2026 state elections.

The bold declaration comes amidst growing political friction in the state, with Gogoi claiming that the people of Assam are increasingly disillusioned with the current BJP-led government and are looking for a change in leadership. “The land grabbed by the chief minister and his ministers—under the guise of protecting land rights—will be returned to the people,” Gogoi stated emphatically. He further added that the very first cabinet meeting of a Congress government would be dedicated to a decision to redistribute these lands to the poor.

Gogoi’s announcement signals a strategic pivot in the Congress’s electoral narrative, linking the issue of land rights directly to top government officials. He also outlined plans for a comprehensive overhaul of the state’s land and economic policies, promising to provide relief and support to the common populace. The Congress president maintained that good governance must be centered on the principles of equity and justice. His remarks are poised to significantly intensify the political discourse in Assam, particularly as the BJP government continues its own high-profile eviction drives to clear encroached forest lands.
