Doctor Assaulted at Tripura’s GBP Hospital, Sparks Outcry Over Safety
AGARTALA — A shocking incident of violence at Tripura’s premier GBP Hospital has left a doctor injured and ignited a fresh debate on the security of healthcare professionals across the state. In the early hours of Sunday, Dr. Litan Das was brutally assaulted by two men, attendants of a patient, while he was on duty in the emergency department.
Dr. Das, who was admitted to the same hospital with multiple injuries, is now reported to be stable and out of danger. The assault occurred around 3:45 AM when two brothers, Tapan Sarkar and Bapan Sarkar, brought their father, Bimal Sarkar, to the hospital. The patient had allegedly consumed poison mixed with alcohol. While doctors were providing urgent care, the brothers turned aggressive and violently attacked Dr. Das and another doctor, Dr. Abhiek Deb.
“They verbally abused the doctors before pushing them to the ground and beating them up,” stated Dr. Shishendu Dhar, head of the emergency department. He expressed deep distress over the assault, noting that medical staff were attacked despite providing immediate care. A formal complaint has been lodged with the police, and a detailed FIR is expected to be filed on Monday by the Medical Superintendent.
Although private security guards were present, they reportedly failed to intervene in time, allowing the attackers to flee the scene. The two men abandoned their father and vanished before police could arrive. While police have initiated raids, no arrests have been made as of the latest reports. The Deputy Medical Superintendent, Dr. Kanak Chowdhury, voiced serious concern over the increasing vulnerability of medical staff, calling the assault “unacceptable.” This incident has once again highlighted the urgent need for enhanced protection and stricter enforcement of laws to ensure the safety of healthcare workers.
