Dhadak 2 Faces Uphill Battle as Box Office Pales in Comparison to Predecessor
The spiritual successor to the 2018 hit Dhadak, starring Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri, has opened to a muted response at the box office, struggling to match the blockbuster success of the original. Directed by Shazia Iqbal, Dhadak 2 has managed to collect a modest Rs. 11.50 crore net over its opening weekend, a far cry from the Rs. 33.67 crore earned by its predecessor, which marked the debut of Ishaan Khatter and Janhvi Kapoor.
While the original film, a Hindi remake of the Marathi classic Sairat, was a commercial juggernaut, the sequel’s box office journey is proving to be a tough climb. The weekend figures for Dhadak 2 show a slight upward trend, from Rs. 3.50 crore on Friday to Rs. 4.25 crore on Sunday, but the overall collection is still a third of what Dhadak minted in its first three days. The film’s competition is also a major factor, with Ajay Devgn’s comedy-drama Son of Sardaar 2 scoring a solid Rs. 24.75 crore in its own opening weekend, overshadowing the new release.
Despite receiving positive reviews for its strong performances and socially relevant storyline, an adaptation of the Tamil film Pariyerum Perumal, Dhadak 2 is now banking on positive word-of-mouth to sustain its run. The coming weeks will be crucial as the film faces further competition from big-ticket releases like War 2 and Rajinikanth’s Coolie, both slated to hit cinemas on August 14. Whether this new-age love story can find its footing and resonate with audiences in the long run remains to be seen.
