Devotees in a Spiritual Trance as Guru Rinpoche’s Statue Parades Through Gangtok
GANGTOK: The capital city of Sikkim resonated with spiritual fervor on Monday as the sacred statue of Guru Rinpoche, revered as the patron saint of Sikkim, was carried in a solemn procession to mark his birth anniversary, known as Trungkar Tsechu. The statue, maintained by the esteemed Dodrupchen Rinpoche at Chorten Lhagang, was the centerpiece of the Guru Chyendren procession, a tradition that saw hundreds of devotees and monks participate with deep reverence.
The air was filled with the rhythmic chanting of the Vajra Guru mantra as the procession, led by monks blowing traditional ritual instruments, wound its way through the main arteries of Gangtok. Following a designated route from Deorali to Metro Point, Zero Point, and White Hall before returning to Chorten Gonpa, the procession was a sight to behold. The devotional journey was a tribute to Guru Padmasambhava, the precious master, whose birth anniversary is a significant day for Buddhists across the state.
The highlight of the day’s celebrations at the Chorten Monastery was the much-anticipated unveiling of a rare Thangka depicting Guru Rinpoche. The masterpiece of Buddhist art captivated the audience, adding another layer of spiritual significance to the festivities. The annual observance, organized by the Sikkim Buddhist Duechen Organization and other allied associations, served as a poignant reminder of the enduring legacy of Padmasambhava, who is credited with subduing malevolent spirits and transforming them into protectors of the Dharma.
Every 10th day of the lunar month is celebrated as Guru Tsechu, but the Trungkar Tsechu holds a special place in the hearts of the Sikkimese people. The prayers and offerings made on this day are dedicated to the well-being and enlightenment of all sentient beings, reinforcing the core principles of compassion and interconnectedness that lie at the heart of Buddhist philosophy. The procession and subsequent celebrations were a powerful display of faith, unity, and a shared spiritual heritage.
