Tributes Pour in from Northeast as Political Stalwart Shibu Soren Passes Away
National: Leaders from India’s Northeastern states on Monday joined the nation in mourning the death of veteran politician Shibu Soren, remembering him as a towering figure whose relentless pursuit of tribal rights and social justice left an indelible mark on Indian politics. The former Jharkhand Chief Minister and founder of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) breathed his last in a Delhi hospital, where he was receiving treatment for a prolonged illness. He was 81.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma led the tributes from the region, describing Soren’s demise as “deeply painful.” Sarma highlighted the leader’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of marginalized communities throughout his long and impactful career. The sentiment was echoed by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, who, in a heartfelt social media post, called Soren a “dedicated statesman” and a “towering figure.” Sangma offered his condolences to the bereaved family and the people of Jharkhand, praying for the departed soul’s eternal peace.
From Manipur, Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla also expressed his sorrow, acknowledging Soren’s enduring contributions to public service and the cause of tribal rights. A statement from the Raj Bhavan highlighted Soren’s roles as a veteran parliamentarian and a former Union Minister, underscoring his significant presence on the national stage. Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, in his tribute, hailed Soren as a “visionary leader” and a “champion of Jharkhand’s identity,” saying his legacy would inspire future generations.
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu also paid his respects, calling Soren a “stalwart of tribal rights.” In a post on X, Khandu extended his deepest condolences to Soren’s family and loved ones, and to the people of Jharkhand, wishing for his soul to find eternal peace. The collective tributes from the Northeast paint a picture of a leader whose influence transcended state borders, a figure respected and revered for his lifelong struggle for the upliftment of the tribal populace. His passing marks the end of an era, and his absence will be deeply felt across the political landscape.
