AI Reading Devices Empower Arunachal’s Visually and Hearing-Impaired Students

Itanagar: Students of the Donyi Polo Mission School for the Hearing and Visually Impaired in Chimpu, Arunachal Pradesh, have been equipped with AI-powered ‘KIBO’ reading devices, giving them access to printed, handwritten, and digital content independently.

Chief Minister Pema Khandu, while handing over the devices, described the moment as a step forward in inclusive education. “Real progress happens when innovation meets compassion, and when no one is left behind. With KIBO, our children can now access printed, handwritten, and digital content on their own, in their own language, and at their own pace,” he said.

Established in 1990 by former CM Gegong Apang, the school has played a vital role in special education in the region. Recognising its contribution, the Arunachal Pradesh government recently raised its annual grant-in-aid to ₹2 crore and sanctioned a ₹5 crore corpus fund to support its long-term development.
