Tripura CM Calls for Cultural Movement to Promote State’s Heritage

Agartala: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has made a passionate plea for culture to transform into a mass movement, advocating for the preservation and modernisation of the state’s unique cultural tapestry. Speaking at the inaugural meeting of the reconstituted State-level Cultural Advisory Committee on Tuesday, the Chief Minister underscored the pivotal role of culture in fostering mental and spiritual well-being.

CM Saha, who also serves as the committee’s chairman, stressed the importance of showcasing Tripura’s distinctive “mixed culture” to a global audience. He called for a concerted effort to nurture and modernise local traditions with “innovative thinking” to captivate the younger generation and ensure the longevity of the region’s rich heritage. The committee, which has been reconstituted with 39 members, is tasked with spearheading this initiative.

The Chief Minister highlighted the need to focus on skill development for artists, a point he noted is frequently emphasised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He urged the committee to identify talented artists at the grassroots level and provide them with the necessary support to hone their craft and create “attractive presentations.”

Lamenting the gradual disappearance of traditional art forms like kirtan, puppet dance, and yatra, CM Saha called for a revival of these practices through innovative approaches. He stressed that these cultural expressions are the “ornament of a society” and must be protected from the pressures of modernity. The meeting was attended by key officials, including ICA Department Secretary PK Chakraborty and Tourism Department Director Prashant Badal Negi, among others.
