Forces step up drive against crime and misinformation in Manipur

IMPHAL – In a series of intensive operations on August 6, security forces in Manipur have cracked down on illegal activities ranging from cattle smuggling to militant extortion, while also combating the spread of fake news. The concerted effort saw multiple arrests and seizures across the Tengnoupal and Imphal East districts, highlighting a renewed push to restore law and order.

The day’s events kicked off at the Khudengthabi Permanent Vehicle Check Post in Tengnoupal, where security personnel intercepted a smuggling attempt. Three men—Hemminlen Haokip (26), Shuhao Haokip (59), and Henkholal Lhouvum (36), all from M. Chahnou Village—were apprehended while transporting 13 cattle in a four-wheeler. Authorities seized the vehicle, which had forged registration documents, and the livestock, collectively valued at an estimated ₹8.45 lakh. The accused are currently in custody, and an investigation into the forged papers is underway.

Meanwhile, in Imphal East, police made a significant arrest, nabbing Laihaorungbam Sanatomba Singh (47), an active cadre of the banned militant group SOREPA, from his residence in Kongpal Chingangbam Leikai. The accused is believed to be a key figure in an extortion racket, allegedly targeting a wide range of victims, including schools, petrol pumps, government offices, and local businesses in the valley region. Police recovered two mobile phones and an Aadhaar card from his possession, which are expected to provide crucial leads in the ongoing probe.

The police also focused on public safety and traffic discipline, conducting checks on vehicles and removing tinted films from 16 cars, enforcing traffic regulations for road visibility and security.

In a separate development, authorities issued a stern warning against the circulation of a fake video. The misleading footage, which was being shared with the false claim that it was shot outside Imphal’s Classic Hotel on August 6, was fact-checked by the police. Officials confirmed the video was originally recorded on June 7 near Imphal Airport and cautioned that legal action will be taken against anyone who spreads such false content.
