Mizoram Police Nets Mammoth Drug Haul Worth Rs 302 Crore in Two Weeks
Aizawl: In a spectacular display of tenacity, Mizoram Police have seized an astounding haul of illegal narcotics valued at nearly Rs 302 crore in a series of meticulously planned operations across the state over the past fortnight.
The seizures, which include large quantities of methamphetamine and heroin, underscore the force’s unrelenting drive to combat the drug menace that has plagued the region. Inspector General of Police (Headquarters) and Chief Public Relations Officer H Ramthlengliana lauded the efforts of his personnel, stating, “Our relentless and untiring drive against drugs and other illegal activities continues. Significant seizures of contraband items were recently made by Mizoram Police at several locations.”
The operations, often conducted in collaboration with other security forces like the CRPF and Assam Rifles, have resulted in multiple arrests and the dismantling of several smuggling networks.
The most significant seizure, a staggering Rs 300 crore worth of suspected crystal methamphetamine, was made on August 1 by a joint team from the CID Special Branch and Special Narcotics PS. The contraband, weighing 20.304 kilograms, was discovered hidden in a specially fabricated compartment of a pickup truck intercepted on the Zemabawk-Seling route.
The driver, B Lalthazuala, and the prime suspect, Bawilianthang, were promptly arrested. The same operation also yielded 1.625 kilograms of heroin, valued at Rs 49.56 lakh. Following closely, a joint operation on August 9 by the Special Narcotics Police Station and the 225 Battalion CRPF in Aizawl led to the seizure of 3.930 kilograms of methamphetamine tablets, estimated at Rs 51.09 lakh, from a car in the Seling and Bungbangla areas, leading to the arrest of three individuals.
Champhai Police have also been instrumental, seizing significant quantities of heroin on multiple occasions. On August 6, 1.053 kilograms of heroin, worth Rs 31.59 lakh, were seized from a vehicle at the Khankawn Checkgate, leading to the arrest of a woman.
Similar seizures were made on July 31 and July 28, with the latter resulting in the arrest of two individuals from Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. The Lunglei Police, in collaboration with the 20th Battalion Assam Rifles, also made their mark on August 1, recovering 220.81 grams of heroin from a passenger and an additional 120.31 grams from three other passengers in the same vehicle.
A total of 14 arrests have been made across all these operations, with cases registered under various sections of the NDPS Act. The massive seizures are a testament to the police force’s commitment to eradicating the drug trade and ensuring a safer environment for the citizens of Mizoram.
