Sikkim’s Future Hinges on Empowering Youth, CM Tamang Asserts on International Youth Day
GANGTOK: On the occasion of International Youth Day, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang extended his greetings to the people of the state, underscoring the critical role young people will play in shaping Sikkim’s future.
In his message, the CM highlighted that the state’s continued progress in key sectors like tourism, environmental conservation, and technology is directly tied to the effective training and engagement of its youth.
This comes amidst a strong state-wide push for youth empowerment, with various initiatives focused on skill development, entrepreneurship, and capacity-building. Targeted vocational training schemes have already benefited thousands of young Sikkimese, providing them with practical skills in growing fields such as digital technologies and sustainable agriculture.
CM Tamang described the youth as potential catalysts for community transformation and economic growth. “Empowered youth can lead community transformation, strengthen local economies, and contribute meaningfully to governance and social change. Sikkim’s progress in tourism, environment, and technology will depend greatly on how effectively its youth are trained and engaged,” he stated. He hailed International Youth Day not just as a celebration but as a crucial reminder of the collective responsibility to provide opportunities for the state’s “talented and ambitious young generation” to learn, innovate, and lead.
Meanwhile, the Citizen Action Party (CAP) also joined in the greetings, with Party President Ganesh K. Rai emphasising the day’s significance in addressing contemporary challenges. According to him, young people are essential in tackling issues ranging from unemployment and climate change to preserving the state’s unique culture and promoting good governance. In a statement, the party reaffirmed its commitment to “empowering our youth with quality education, skill development, and equal opportunities,” calling it the key to building a prosperous and self-reliant Sikkim. They also pledged to create platforms where the voices of young citizens are heard and acted upon.
