Meghalaya Rolls Out First Public Bicycle Sharing System with Milind Soman
Shillong: In a significant stride towards a greener and healthier urban future, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and fitness icon Milind Soman today officially inaugurated Shillong’s first Public Bicycle Sharing (PBS) system. The launch, held on the streets of the scenic hill city, marks a pivotal moment for sustainable transport in the state.
The initiative is a cornerstone of the Shillong Urban Mobility Policy (2024), which aims to reduce vehicular congestion and promote a more active lifestyle among residents. With a long-term goal of making 35% of all city transport non-motorised, the PBS system is seen as the first pedal stroke towards transforming Shillong into a truly “walking and cycling city.” A fleet of over 20 electric bicycles has been introduced in the pilot phase, providing an eco-friendly and convenient commuting option for locals and tourists alike.
Chief Minister Sangma, who took a symbolic inaugural ride to the bustling Police Bazar, emphasised the broader vision behind the project. “This is not just about reducing traffic; it’s about building a greener, fitter Meghalaya for generations to come,” he stated. The project is a collaborative effort between the state’s Urban Affairs Department and GIZ India, operating under the aegis of the Sustainable Urban Mobility – Air Quality, Climate Action & Accessibility (SUM-ACA) project, with backing from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA). The presence of Milind Soman, known for his advocacy of health and fitness, added a celebrity sparkle to the launch, underlining the initiative’s focus on well-being.
