Assam: Nagaon’s Dhakaipatti Renamed as Roopkonwar Chowk in Homage to Jyoti Prasad Agarwala
Guwahati: The historic heart of Nagaon town, long known as Dhakaipatti, will now be officially called “Roopkonwar Chowk,” the district administration announced today.
The move, aimed at honouring the profound legacy of Assam’s cultural icon Jyoti Prasad Agarwala, was confirmed by Nagaon Deputy Commissioner Devashish Sharma at a press conference.
For generations, the bustling locality has been a landmark in the town, its name woven into the very fabric of local history.
Now, with this renaming, authorities hope to formally recognise and celebrate the contributions of Agarwala, reverently known as “Roopkonwar,” who was a pioneer in Assamese cinema, literature, and music.
The administration believes that this change is more than just a new name on a signpost; it is a conscious effort to inspire younger generations and remind them of the rich cultural heritage that Assam possesses, keeping the memory of one of its most legendary figures alive for posterity.
