Mizoram CM Lalduhoma Highlights ‘Golden Triangle’ Proximity in State’s Drug Crisis
Aizawl – Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma has sounded the alarm over the state’s geographical vulnerability to the illicit drug trade, directly linking the steady influx of narcotics to its close proximity to the “Golden Triangle,” a notorious drug-producing region in Southeast Asia.
Speaking at a state-level event for the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan (Drugs Free India Campaign), the Chief Minister emphasised the need for collective action to safeguard Mizo society. The event, held in the state capital, saw over 600 students from various educational institutions in attendance, underscoring the focus on the youth.
“The Golden Triangle’s geographical closeness to Mizoram is a major factor in the frequent inflow of drugs,” Lalduhoma stated, urging a united front against this menace. The Golden Triangle, a mountainous zone encompassing parts of Myanmar, Thailand, and Laos, is infamous for large-scale drug manufacturing and serves as a major global narcotics hub. The Chief Minister’s address highlighted the direct impact of this region’s activities on Mizoram’s internal drug problem.
In a fervent appeal for complete drug eradication, Lalduhoma specifically addressed the young audience, cautioning against even casual use, which he warned could quickly escalate into full-blown addiction. He implored those already caught in the grip of substance abuse to find the courage to quit and embark on a journey of rebuilding their lives. The Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, under which the event was held, is a nationwide initiative being implemented in 372 districts, including all 11 districts of Mizoram. The campaign’s core mission is to raise awareness about the perils of drug use and prevent new users from joining the vicious cycle of addiction.
