Assam Cabinet Greenlights Landmark Initiatives for Healthcare, Power, and Business Growth

GUWAHATI – In a significant move set to resonate across the state, the Assam Cabinet, under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, gave its nod to a series of key decisions on Wednesday, signalling a forward-looking approach to public welfare and economic development. The sweeping measures touch upon critical sectors, from ensuring uninterrupted healthcare access to bolstering the state’s energy infrastructure and creating a more conducive environment for industry.

A cornerstone of the Cabinet’s decisions was the financial sanction of a remaining Rs 325 crore for the Mukhya Mantri Ayushman Asom Yojana for the fiscal year 2025–26. This approval ensures that lakhs of beneficiaries will continue to receive cashless and free medical treatment without any hitch. The move underscores the state government’s steadfast commitment to providing robust and accessible healthcare services to its citizens.

On the energy front, the Cabinet took a decisive step to address the state’s power needs. It gave a post-facto approval for the procurement of 500 MW of electricity from the Ministry of Coal at a competitive rate of Rs 5.79 per unit. This initiative is expected to help the Assam government keep power tariffs affordable for its consumers. Furthermore, in a major push towards sustainable energy, the Cabinet approved a massive 1,500 MW pumped storage project in Karbi Anglong, a significant step towards enhancing Assam’s clean energy generation capacity and securing its energy future.

The Cabinet also took a bold step to boost the state’s industrial and business landscape. It approved amendments to the Assam Unified Building Construction (Regulation) Byelaws, 2022, to foster an ‘Ease of Doing Business’ environment. The changes are specifically designed to encourage the growth of industries, promote the construction of environmentally friendly green buildings, and facilitate housing for the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS).

In a separate but equally important decision, eight proposals for the reclassification and transfer of non-agricultural land were approved under Mission Basundhara 3.0 in the districts of Dhubri and Biswanath. This move aims to streamline land administration and bring greater efficiency to land-related services. Speaking after the meeting, the Chief Minister reiterated that the decisions were a clear reflection of the government’s unwavering focus on inclusive healthcare, a reliable and affordable power supply, sustainable energy goals, and creating an investor-friendly ecosystem.
