Assam Gets Second North East IIM in Guwahati, Set to Become Premier Education Hub
GUWAHATI — In a landmark development for Assam’s higher education landscape, the Union Cabinet has greenlit the establishment of a new Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Guwahati. The announcement, made by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, marks a significant milestone, positioning the institute as the second IIM in the North East, after IIM Shillong. This decision is being hailed as a major win for the state, which has long aspired to host a premier management institution.
The new IIM’s permanent campus will be situated in Palasbari, within the Kamrup district. For its initial years, the institute will be mentored by the prestigious IIM Ahmedabad, one of the country’s oldest and most respected business schools. This mentorship is expected to ensure the new institution quickly establishes its academic rigour and operational excellence. The Chief Minister stated that the state government is prepared to provide a temporary campus to enable classes to commence as soon as possible. The Centre has reportedly committed over Rs 500 crore for the project, which will be built on a 76.83-hectare plot of land.
Chief Minister Sarma highlighted that the new IIM will be a “game changer” for Assam and the entire region. It will significantly bolster the state’s status as an emerging hub for higher education and skill development, providing pathways for world-class management training. The institute is anticipated to draw students from across India, fostering a diverse academic environment. Furthermore, Sarma believes it will open doors for global academic collaborations, research, and entrepreneurship, thereby giving a major boost to Assam’s economic and professional ecosystem. With Guwahati already home to institutions like IIT Guwahati, AIIMS, and a National Law University, the new IIM will solidify its position as a centre for flagship educational institutions in India.
