Sikkim: Drug Peddler Nabbed in Late-Night Operation in Soreng District

Soreng: In a significant breakthrough against the drug menace, the Soreng District Police on Friday night arrested a man and seized a cache of narcotic substances from his possession. The operation, conducted by personnel from the Naya Bazar Police Station, culminated in the apprehension of a 32-year-old habitual drug peddler, Passang Bhutia.

Acting on specific intelligence gathered through sustained surveillance, a police team intercepted a taxi near the Forest Bungalow in Nayabazar at approximately 9:03 pm. A thorough search of the vehicle, bearing registration number SK04J/0015, led to the discovery of 144 capsules of Windlas Winspasmo Forte, neatly packed in 18 strips. In addition to the contraband, the police also recovered Rs 4,600 in cash, believed to be proceeds from his illicit activities. The search was carried out in the presence of Pramila Gurung, the BDO of Baiguney.

Passang Bhutia, son of the late Jangbo Bhutia and a resident of Housing Colony, Nayabazar, has been described by police as a known figure in the local drug trade, having been under their radar for a considerable period. Following the seizure, a case was promptly registered against him under the stringent provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, and the Sikkim Anti-Drugs Act, 2006.

The seized substances and the taxi have been taken into police custody. The Soreng District Police, in a statement, reaffirmed their unwavering resolve to combat substance abuse and reiterated their appeal to the public for cooperation in their mission to create a drug-free district.
