Wife Attacks Husband With Acid in West Tripura, Hunt Underway

Agartala: A shocking incident has come to light from West Tripura where a woman, riding pillion on a motorcycle, allegedly poured acid on her husband, leaving him with severe burn injuries. The victim, identified as Shibaji Debbarma, a farmer from Chandpur, is currently undergoing treatment at Agartala’s GBP Hospital. His condition has been reported as stable. The accused, Sumitra Debbarma, his wife, fled the scene immediately and is now absconding, with police launching a massive manhunt to trace her.

The incident unfolded on Wednesday afternoon as the couple was travelling towards Chandpur on a bike. According to Himadri Sarkar, Officer-in-Charge of Sidhai police station, Sumitra abruptly poured a corrosive substance on Shibaji’s face and neck. Overcome by intense pain, he managed to stop the motorcycle and get off. While screaming for help, his wife allegedly attempted to pour more acid on him, but was thwarted as local villagers rushed to the scene. The locals quickly shifted the injured man to the hospital. Preliminary investigations by the police suggest a possible motive linked to alleged domestic violence. “It appears the woman was a victim of domestic abuse, which might have prompted her to carry out the acid attack,” the OC stated. So far, no formal complaint has been filed by the victim, who is still recuperating in the hospital. Authorities have stated that they will initiate legal proceedings once a formal statement is recorded from him.
