Biggest-ever Drug Haul in Mizoram: Cops Seize Methamphetamine and Heroin Worth ₹75 Crore
Aizawl: In a massive blow to the region’s drug syndicate, Mizoram’s Excise & Narcotics Department, in a joint operation with the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and the Border Security Force’s 191 Battalion, has confiscated a staggering haul of methamphetamine and heroin in Aizawl district.
The contraband, with an estimated street value of ₹75 crore, was seized on Thursday evening, marking it as the second-largest drug bust in the state’s history. The operation unfolded along National Highway-06A, a key transit route between Keifang and Seling. Officials, acting on specific intelligence, intercepted two trucks suspected of carrying narcotics.
A thorough inspection led to the discovery of 49.101 kilograms of methamphetamine and 36 grams of heroin, meticulously hidden within specially constructed, secret compartments in the vehicles. Preliminary investigations suggest the drugs were smuggled across the border from neighbouring Myanmar.
The operation culminated in the arrest of eight individuals, who have been identified as Zoramsiama (25), Lalruatkima (42), Nanglamthanga (20), David Lalhmachhuana (28), T. Chatuanvanlalnghaka (29), Lalramthara (27), Hmangaihzaua (38), and Lalrammuana (29). In addition to the arrests, four vehicles—a Tata truck (MZ01F-1037), a Renault Duster (MZ07-7237), an Ashok Leyland truck (MZ06-8810), and a Mahindra Bolero (MZ01Z-8246)—that were used in the illicit transportation have also been seized. This landmark seizure comes on the heels of another record bust of nearly 100 kilograms of methamphetamine a few years ago, further cementing Mizoram’s unfortunate status as a major transit hub for drug trafficking in the ‘Golden Triangle’ region. All eight accused have been booked under the stringent Narcotic Drugs & Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985.
Upon conviction, they face a potential prison sentence of 10 to 20 years, along with fines that could go up to ₹2 lakh. The authorities have hailed the successful operation as a major victory in the ongoing battle against the drug menace plaguing the region.
