SSLC Exams Shift to January 2026: A Big Relief for Meghalaya Students
Shillong: In a significant relief for students, the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBoSE) has announced that the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) Examination, 2026, will now begin in the last week of January instead of the previously scheduled December 2025.
This decision, backed by the state government, was officially communicated through a notification issued by MBoSE on August 27, following a letter of approval dated August 25. The shift comes after extensive consultations with school associations, parents, and other key stakeholders who voiced concerns about the early exam schedule.
One of the primary reasons for the change was the incomplete syllabus in many secondary schools, especially in the state’s rural belts. Many schools found themselves racing against time to cover the curriculum adequately. Parents and educators also pointed out a key issue: a December exam would leave students with a lengthy, unproductive gap until May, when results from other major boards like CBSE and ICSE are typically declared. This change ensures students remain engaged and focused on their studies for a longer period.
As per the revised schedule, the SSLC exams will now extend into the second week of February. MBoSE officials anticipate releasing the results by March, with a plan for supplementary exams in April. This new timeline offers students a more flexible and less stressful examination cycle, providing a crucial safety net for those who may need to retake a subject. This move is seen as a pragmatic step by MBoSE to align the state’s academic calendar more closely with national standards, prioritising the well-being and academic preparedness of its students.
