Assam: Garo Community Remembers Political Pioneer Sonaram R Sangma on 109th Death Anniversary

Guwahati – A solemn air filled the capital city today as Assam came together to honour Sonaram R Sangma, the revered political luminary and the first from the Garo community to step into the political arena. The occasion was his 109th death anniversary, a day observed with profound respect and a pledge to carry forward his legacy of dedicated public service.

The memorial event, a collaborative effort between the Sonaram R Sangma Memorial Trust Society and the Garo Students’ Union, was a heartfelt tribute to a man who, a century ago, sowed the seeds of political consciousness within the Garo community. His vision and pioneering efforts laid the groundwork for future generations to gain political voice and representation.

Leading the homage was Assam’s Minister for Education and Welfare of Plain Tribes and Backward Classes, Dr. Ranoj Pegu. In a gesture of deep respect, Dr. Pegu offered floral tributes at Sangma’s statue, a symbol of his enduring influence. The ceremony was further marked by a significant announcement: the laying of the foundation stone for a new auditorium dedicated to Sangma’s memory. The project, greenlit by the state’s Department of Tribal Welfare, carries an estimated budget of Rs 1 crore, a testament to the government’s commitment to preserving the memory of this remarkable leader.

The commemoration drew a wide array of dignitaries, underscoring the broad-based respect for Sangma. Among the notable attendees were Assam Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker Dr. Numal Momin, Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council Chief Executive Member Tankeswar Rabha, former MLA Dipak Kumar Rabha, and a number of prominent figures from various Garo socio-political organisations. Their presence highlighted the unifying power of Sonaram R Sangma’s legacy, which continues to inspire and bridge communities across the state.
