Tripura Tops Northeast with Robust Child Protection Network

AGARTALA: Tripura has cemented its position as a frontrunner in child welfare across the Northeast, with a comprehensive protection system now fully functional across all eight of its districts. The state’s impressive progress was highlighted by Chief Minister Manik Saha at the One-Day North Eastern Regional Convention on Child Rights held at Prajna Bhavan. Saha revealed that the state currently manages 44 child care institutions that provide shelter and support to approximately 950 children. Additionally, all districts have specialized juvenile justice infrastructure, including operational Juvenile Justice Boards and Child Welfare Committees.

The state’s commitment to securing the future of its children is evident in its multifaceted approach. From 2022 to 2025, around 28 children have been successfully placed in loving homes through legal adoption, a testament to the streamlined processes in place. Furthermore, Special Juvenile Police Units are actively working in all eight districts to ensure child protection. The network extends beyond institutional care, with over 4,200 children benefiting from community-based sponsorship programmes and aftercare services successfully helping 14 young adults reintegrate into society.

Emphasising the shared responsibility of protecting the youth, the Chief Minister underscored that children are not “miniature adults” but human beings with their own rights. He stated, “Protecting them is safeguarding the future of our nation. If we neglect children, we neglect the very foundation of our society.” This vision is supported by significant government initiatives, including nutrition and healthcare schemes. As per data from July 2025, approximately 2,29,000 children have benefited from the Integrated Child Development Services and Poshan Abhiyan schemes, which are focused on proper nutrition and preventing malnutrition. Saha reiterated that effective child protection requires active participation from not just the government but also families, communities, and society at large.
