Guwahati: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has announced that hookah bars in the city will permanently be shut down.
The decision to shut down the bars was decided after a meeting with the GMC officials in the city. Earlier on June 5, the GMC had ordered all hookah bars in the city to be shut temporarily as the situation related to the COVID was deteriorating.
Apart from this, the GMC has claimed that it will allow the sale of tobacco, cigarettes, and other allied product only with registered vendors in areas under its jurisdiction.
GMC Commissioner Debashish Sharma stated that decision to permit the selling of tobacco products only registered vendors were taken to control the sale of tobacco products in the city.
GMC stated in an official statement that the regulation of excess tobacco products is necessary to save the lives of people from dangerous life-long diseases.
This decision was taken as per the directives of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the urban Poverty Alleviation Department.
