Drug disposal a publicity stunt by Assam CM: AJP
Guwahati: President of the Assam Jatiya Parishad, Lurin Jyoti Gogoi on Sunday alleged that Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has been “destroying drugs” by setting them on fire is just a mere publicity stunt.
Speaking to the media, Gogoi said that over the past few days they have noticed that the CM had been burning drugs that were seized in the past few days. “We appreciate the efforts made against drugs and even we need a drugs-free Assam. However, there are certain procedures involved in destroying drugs and that needs to be executed under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985”, he added.
He further added that they have noticed the CM destroying the drugs like there is some festival going on.
He alleged that with the situation going on, the AJP has sensed that the CM instead of trying to charge sheet criminals, is trying to gain “publicity” of the events.
Lurin also claimed that the NDPS act deals with how drugs and other such illegal substances are to be disposed of but “it now seems that by destroying the drugs, there is an attempt to erase evidence related to the peddlers and other such criminals in the state”.
He also claimed that it was seen that due to lack of evidence many accused get out of jail and if the drugs are disposed of without any proper rules of NDPS, then there are chances of such criminals not being charge-sheeted as well.
