Congress breaks up with AIUDF

Guwahati: The Congress in Assam has finally announced its decision to cut ties with the Badruddin Ajmal-led All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF).

Both the parties were a major part of the ‘mahajot’ (grand-alliance) which comprised of 10 political parties in the state. The grand alliance was formed before the 2021 Assam Assembly polls in the state this year.

The decision was announced after the core committee meeting of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) that was held with the by-election of six assembly constituencies in the state in mind.

Congress claimed that it was unhappy with the AIUDF’s relationship with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The Congress in a statement said, “The Committee observed that alliance partner AIUDF’s behavior and attitude in relation to BJP party has baffled the members of the Congress party. The AIUDF leadership’s and senior members’ continuous and mysterious praise of the BJP party and the Chief Minister has affected the public perception of the Congress party.”

The statement added, “In this connection after a long discussion the Core Committee members of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee unanimously decided that AIUDF can no longer remain an alliance partner of Mahajot and in this regards will send intimation to AICC.”

The statement further claimed that the decision to remove AIUDF from the opposition’s Grand Alliance was unanimous and the Congress High Command will be informed accordingly.

Following this, AIUDF legislator and leader Hafiz Bashir Ahmed stated that the decision of Congress to remove AIUDF from the grand-alliance was “unfortunate”.
