Assam schools to count Flora & Fauna
Guwahati: With an objective of promoting Assam’s rich biodiversity of flora and fauna the state Education Minister Ranuj Pegu launched the School Biodiversity Register ( SBR) at the State Mission Office of Samagra Siksha on Thursday.
The initiative was taken in the presence of principal secretary to the education department, B Kalyan Chakravarthy, and mission director, Samagra Shiksha, Assam, Roshni Aparanji Korati.
Pegu said that the programme will assist in the development of a biodiversity management plan for the area in order to conserve the area’s existing and rare threatened species.
It may be mentioned that SBR was created as a record of people’s knowledge, perceptions, and attitudes about natural resources, plants, and animals, as well as their utilisation and conservation in a village or panchayat, which would then be used to create a database in every school that would include all common species of flora and fauna.
Meanwhile, Chakravarthy said that the state government has started SBR as schools are reopening with the decline in COVID-19 cases and training of teachers has already started.
