Meghalaya: Big blow to Congress, 12 MLAs to join TMC

Guwahati: In a massive jolt to the Congress party in Meghalaya, 12 of 18 MLAs will join Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Thursday, reports said.

Former chief minister Mukul Sangma was among the leaders that switched parties. Sangma, the Assembly’s Leader of the Opposition, was said to be dissatisfied with Congress’s senior leadership.

The Trinamool Congress, according to a senior TMC leader, has emerged as the state’s main opposition party as a result of the new MLAs.

According to reports, poll strategist Prashant Kishor’s team is in Shillong to weigh in on the TMC’s possibilities in the state, with an eye on the Meghalaya elections in 2023.

It may be mentioned that out of the 12 legislators who will join Trinamool, eight MLAs are from Garo Hills, while four lawmakers are from Khasi Jaintia hills.
