Assam: 11 elephants rescued in Goalpara
Guwahati: At least 11 elephants were rescued from two different herds from a mud trap within 24 hours in Assam’s Goalpara district.
According to reports, the elephants came down in search of food from the adjoining hills of Meghalaya to the district’s Choibari area. Locals informed the Forest Department and the officials after they witnessed the elephants unable to get out of the mud.
A forest official said that today they rescued six elephants that were trapped in the same muddy pond in which five other elephants from another herd had been stuck yesterday.
Excavators were utilized by the rescue squad to dig up a side of the pond, allowing the elephants to gently climb up. The villagers, according to officials, assisted them in the operation.
The elephants were led to a nearby jungle, according to the official.
On Thursday afternoon, a 10-hour operation was carried out after five elephants from the same herd fell into the same pond.
It may be mentioned that among the stuck elephants there was a calf.
