Assam: Ex MLAs get jail for illegal angling in Kaziranga

Guwahati: A local court in Golaghat district of Assam on Saturday sentenced two former state legislators for illegal fishing and attacking forest rangers.

Ex- MLAs Kushal Deori and Jiten Gogoi have been sentenced to imprisonment for illegally entering the Kaziranga National Park on 17th March, 2009.

Kushal Deori and Jiten Gogoi along with three other persons, had entered the protected region to go fishing.

Former ULFA militants Deori and Gogoi are also accused of threatening to kill a forest inspector who had instructed them not to enter the Kaziranga National Park for illicit fishing.

They had also threatened him and demolished the forest range office in Kohora of Kaziranga with their AK-47.

The accused were convicted to two years in prison and each was fined Rs 5,000 by the Golaghat Court.
