Delhi: AASAA Stages Protest Demanding ST Status

Guwahati: The All-Adivasi Students’ Association of Assam (AASAA) staged demonstrations in New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on Sunday, demanding that the Adivasi population of Assam be granted scheduled tribe (ST) status.

The demonstration was organised in collaboration with the Delhi NCR community.

According to the AASAA, the BJP government in Assam defrauded the whole Adivasi people by giving tribal status.

They further said that while their community has been granted ST designation in other areas of the country, their demand in Assam has been ignored.

According to reports, one AASAA member stated that “We want ST status as soon as possible. The federal government and the state government made numerous promises in the past, but have yet to fulfil them.”

“We demand that the subject be decided by both the centre and the state, and that we be granted tribal recognition. If our demands are not granted quickly, we will have no choice but to escalate our protests,” another protester stated.
