Assam: 102 govt schools get show-cause notice for poor HSLC results

Guwahati: The Assam Secondary Education Department has issued a show cause notice to 102 state-run schools for poor performance in the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) examinations.

The overall pass rate for the HSLC exams this year was 56.49 percent. It’s significantly lower than the 93.10 percent pass rate in 2021, when the tests were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the results were announced using an evaluation method based on the students’ own assessments.

According to the education department, 25 state-run schools in the state received 0% in this year’s HSLC/AMH examination, while 70 schools received a pass rate of less than 10% and seven schools received a pass percentage of 10%.

Director of Secondary Education, Mamata Hojai, stated that a total of 102 state-run schools had pass percentages of 10% or less.

“Twenty-five schools out of 102 had zero percent results. The principals/headmasters of 102 schools have received show-cause notices. We have requested that they respond in writing within seven days of receiving the letter “she said.

In a letter sent to the Principal/Headmaster of Dr B K B High School, Nagaon, the Director cum Disciplinary Authority of Secondary Education said, “While you are holding the charge of Principal/Headmaster, it is found that the pass percentage of recently declared HSLC/AHM examination, 2022, of your school/institution is 0%. It is seen that the academic performance of your school is pathetically dismal. The poor result of your school reflects upon your performance. You have miserably failed to deliver your duties.”

“You are hereby asked to show cause as to why the disciplinary authority should not consider your dismissal from service. Your written reply in defence should reach the undersigned within 7 days positively from the date of receipt of this letter,” said the government letter.

Cachar district topped the list with 14 failing schools, followed by Karbi Anglong with 13, Goalpara with 9, Jorhat with eight, Kamrup (Metro) and Dhubri with six each, West Karbi Anglong with five, and Karimganj with four.
