Flood victims in Silchar are troubled by price hike; a litre of drinking water costs Rs 80

Guwahati: Amid devastating floods across the state, the affected people now also had to deal with illegal price hikes on essential commodities.

At a time when the whole district is reeling under devastating floods with surface transport entirely cut off, Silchar is witnessing a massive surge in prices of vegetables and essential, causing uproar among common people.

Reportedly, one litre of drinking water costs around rs 80 where its actual price is Rs 20.

It needs to be noted that Water is currently being sold for a gold price. A 20-litre jar that once cost Rs. 80 is now being sold for between Rs. 1000 and Rs. 2000.

Other than drinking water, modern necessities like candles, eggs, and power generators are 2-3 times more expensive than they were in the past.

A rental generator costs Rs. 3000 per day, an egg is Rs. 15, and a candle is around 15-20 rupees. But whereas the generator costs Rs. 1500, the products only cost 4-5 rupees.

The majority of Silchar is still under water. ATMs lack a digital payment network and are submerged.

A flood-affected person Raaj Nath posted the circumstance on his Facebook wall and wrote, “How will the population endure? Is humanity’s worth listed?”
