Man dies after being infected with Japanese encephalitis in Assam

Guwahati: One person has died after being infected with Japanese encephalitis in Jorhat district of Assam on Friday.

The tragedy took place in Titabor area of the district.

The deceased identified as Kosheshwar Bora.

According to reports, Bora succumbed to the disease today morning.

Reportedly, he was receiving treatment in Jorhat Mission Hospital for the past couple of days.

Japanese encephalitis virus is spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. It is common in a wide swath of Asia and the Western Pacific, including India, most of China, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and Japan.

Most humans who contract the virus do not experience any symptoms, or mild symptoms like headaches or fever.

The virus is found in pigs and birds, and is passed to mosquitoes when they bite infected animals.

A person with severe disease may suffer inflammation of the brain, sudden onset of vomiting, high fever and chills, severe headaches, sensitivity to light, neck stiffness and nausea.

Japanese encephalitis cannot be spread from person to person.
