IND vs ENG: Jasprit Bumrah strikes 35 runs in single over, creates world record

Guwahati: Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah scored the highest runs in an over in Test history against England bowler Stuart Broad, who gave up 35 runs in the over on the second day of the rescheduled fifth Test against England in Birmingham.

In doing so, Bumrah gave Broad the unwelcome distinction of having allowed the most runs in an over in the annals of Test cricket.

In some ways, Bumrah reminded the English bowler of the horror of 2007, when Yuvraj Singh, an Indian all-rounder who is now retired had blasted six sixes in a single T20 World Cup over.

Burah lost his cool and smashed the ball against the England bowler in the 84th over of India’s innings, scoring 29 runs in the process. In that over, Broad also bowled five wide balls and a no-ball, bringing the total number of runs scored to 35.

The Indian pacer broke the previous mark set by the illustrious West Indies skipper Brain Lara, who hit 28 runs in an over during a Test match against Robin Peterson of South Africa in 2003–04. Four fours and two sixes from six legal deliveries made up Lara’s total.

Although Former Australia player George Bailey had also scored 28 runs in an over, he behind Lara in terms of the number of boundaries.

Meanwhile, a boundary off the top edge of Bumrah’s bat signalled the start of the over. The following shot was a short bounder from Broad that sailed over Sam Billing’s head as the keeper. The third ball was given a no ball which was hit over the keeper by Bumrah.

He then smashed three fours in a row over mid-on, to fine-leg and in front of square on the leg side. A clean shot for a six over long leg came on the fifth ball. Bumrah then used the final ball to get a single and keep the strike.
