Assam floods: Centre releases advance of Rs 324.40 cr from SDRF to help state deal with calamity

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for approving Rs 324.40 crore as an advance share of the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF), saying the money will be used to combat the present floods and help with flood victims’ relief efforts.

Taking to Twitter, the chief minister wrote, “We are immensely grateful to PM @narendramodi for the generous act of the Central Government for the release of Rs 324.40 cr as an advance share of the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) This will help combat the current floods and also in making provisions for flood victims.”

The Assam government’s request had been taken into consideration, and with the union home minister’s blessing, it was decided to recommend that the two instalments of the Central share of the SDRF for the year 2022–2023 be released in advance as immediate assistance. This was stated in an office memo that the Home Ministry issued on Wednesday.

The undersigned is requested to report that during the current 2022 monsoon, numerous areas of the State of Assam are facing flooding and landslides.

For the years 2022–2023, the Government of Assam has asked for the release of two instalments of the Central Share of the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) in order to fund relief efforts in the areas affected by disasters.

“The request of the state government has been considered in this Ministry and it has been decided with the approval of the Union Home Minister, to recommend the release of the two instalments of the Central share of SDRF, in advance, for the year 2022-23, as immediate assistance, to the Government of Assam,” the Office Memorandum from Ministry of Home Affairs read.

The Department of Expenditure (Ministry of Finance) is kindly requested to release the Central Share of SDRF, in advance, to Assam for the year 2022–2023 under notification to this Ministry, it said.
