Chinese Visa Case: CBI Raids Karti Chidambaram’s Chennai Residence

Guwahati: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) conducted searches at Congress politician Karti Chidambaram’s home in Chennai on Saturday.

According to CBI sources quoted by ANI, “the searches were done in connection with an alleged Chinese visa scam, as part of a search that remained incomplete before because a few biometric lockers could not be inspected.”

The Delhi High Court had adjourned the hearing on an anticipatory bail plea from the Congress leader on June 24 to July 12.

Chidambaram had filed a plea with the court asking for anticipatory bail in a money laundering case associated with the Chinese visa matter.

Karti Chidambaram has been accused of accepting Rs 50 lakhs in order to illegitimately help obtain visas for 263 Chinese nationals to finish a power project in Punjab.

P Chidambaram, a prominent member of the Congress and his father, was the Union home minister at the time in 2011, however he is not listed as a suspect in the FIR.

Four additional people were also arrested by the CBI, including Chidambaram’s chartered accountant S Bhaskararaman, Bell Tools in Mumbai, and Vikas Makharia, a representative of Talwandi Sabo Power Ltd, a private corporation with offices in Mansa.
