Manipur to set up panel to detect areas prone to landslides
Guwahati: The Manipur government announced on Tuesday that an expert committee will be established to determine the state’s landslide-prone areas.
Representatives from the Manipur Remote Sensing Applications Centre and the Geological Survey of India will make up the high-level committee.
The Chief Minister, N Biren Singh made this announcement after presenting ex-gratia to the relatives of those who perished in the landslide that occurred on national route 102 Tipaimukh Road in Churachandpur on July 8.
The Manipur chief minister also gave ex-gratia payments totaling Rs 5 lakh to each of the deceased’s family members, Rs 50,000 to each person who suffered a serious injury, and Rs 10,000 to each person who suffered a minor injury.
It may be noted that on June 29, a significant landslide struck the railway station at Tupul in Manipur’s Noney district.
There are currently ongoing rescue efforts, and rescue crews have so far retrieved up to 50 bodies.
Meanwhile, the death toll of Assam residents killed in the landslide reached 15 with two more bodies recovered from the site, said officials today.
The authority also claimed that that six people from Assam are still missing.
