Kerala Becomes India’s First State To Have Its Own Internet Service
Guwahati: Chief Minister of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday announced that the state had become the only first state to have its own internet services.
The announcement was made when the Department of Telecommunications granted the Kerala Fiber Optic Network Limited (KFON) an Internet Service Provider (ISP) licence.
The state administration launched an enormous IT infrastructure project to ensure that everyone in the state could access the internet.
The CM said that with this, the project to bridge the digital divide in the society can commence its operations.
Taking to Twitter, CM Vijayan wrote, “Kerala becomes the only State in the country with its own internet service. The Kerala Fiber Optic Network Ltd has received the ISP license from @DoT_India. Now, our prestigious #KFON project can kickstart its operations of providing the internet as a basic right to our people.”

It may be mentioned that the KFON plan calls for offering free internet to 30,000 government offices and people living below the poverty line. It was introduced by the previous administration at a cost of Rs 1,548 crores after internet access was made a fundamental right.
