Tea Worker Injured while working in Factory in Assam’s Dibrugarh Battles with Life at GMCH
Guwahati: In a horrific incident, a woman was critically injured while working at Lepetkatta tea factory when her hair got stuck in the CTC machine in Dibrugarh district of Assam.
The worker has been identified as 24-year-old Moina Nayak, who accidentally entered into the tea garden’s dryer machine and suffered critical injuries.
The incident has created animosity among the tea factory employees.
The patient was taken urgently to Assam Medical College and Hospital for care, but the hospital’s staff recommended Guwahati Medical College and Hospital instead (GMCH).
ATTSA, Dibrugarh district secretary, Lakhindra Kurmi said, “The catastrophe occurred as a result of the garden management’s incompetence. By using the CTC machine, the woman hurt herself. Because they permitted her to operate at the drier machine, the garden management is accountable for the occurrence.”
“We call for a thorough investigation into the incident. Safety comes paramount, according to the garden management, but there is none in the tea factory. The labour department utterly failed to verify the safety precautions. We blame the manager for the occurrence, he added.
Kurmi further said, “The garden management has broken all safety regulations by hiring a woman to operate a drier machine. Although the labour department is aware of all of this, it does nothing to protect the workers in the tea industry.”
“We demand that the injured worker receive full compensation and that she be given a permanent position in the tea garden,” Kurmi added.
Superintendent of GMCH Dr. Abhijeet Sarma said that Moina Nayak is being cared for to the best of their abilities. She will need plastic surgery because she has injuries to her eyes, ear, and nose. She suffered severe injuries; therefore, the plastic surgery will be performed after one month, and the complete healing process will take more than one and a half months, Dr. Sarma said.
