NDA’s Draupadi Murmu Elected 15th Prez Of India
Guwahati: Droupadi Murmu of the NDA has been elected as India’s 15th president with 2,161 votes.
Murmu is the second female President of India after Prativa Pateel.
Yashwant Sinha, her rival and the joint candidate of the Opposition, received 1,058 votes in contrast.
The total valid votes are 3,219 with total value of 8,38,839 of which Droupadi Murmu got 2,161 votes of the value of 5,77,777, while Yashwant Sinha bagged 1,058 votes of the value of 2,61,062.
Meanwhile, festivities got underway at the SLS (Shyam, Laxman & Sipun) Memorial Residential School in Pahadpur, which was established by Murmu in honour of her late husband and two sons.
Murmu served as Jharkhand’s first female governor for more than six years beginning in May 2015.
She served as a minister in the BJP-BJD-led government of Odisha from March 2000 until May 2004.
She was born into the Santhal tribe and was chosen on the BJP ticket to serve as the MLA for the Rairangpur assembly constituency in Odisha in 2000 and 2004.
64-year-old Murmu has become the first tribal President of India.
In this Presidential election, she has the support of Biju Janata Dal (BJD), Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP), Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Janata Dal (Secular), Shiromani Akali Dal, both the factions of Shiv Sena and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM).
It needs to be mentioned that the swearing-in is scheduled to be on July 25th after Mr. Ram Nath Kovind’s tenure ends on July 24.
