3 More Dead from Japanese Encephalitis in Assam, Toll Reaches 47

Guwahati: The number of JE-related deaths in Assam reached 47 on Friday after three more fatalities were recorded in the state in the previous day.

According to the National Health Mission Assam report, out of the three deaths, one fatality each was recorded from the districts of Barpeta, Darrang, and Chirang.

According to the reports, this brought the overall number of JE cases in the state up to 294 since the mosquito-borne illness took a “severe turn” in July of this year.

Rapid reaction teams have been established by district administrations throughout the state to combat and stop the dangerous disease from spreading.

Japanese encephalitis is a viral brain ailment that is carried by mosquitoes in Assam between May and October each year during the monsoon flood season. Many people die of the viral infection and malaria during this period.
