Tripura Govt To Set Up Harness Solar Energy To Supply Power To Remote Villages

Guwahati: Tripura’s administration is considering building photovoltaic power plants to bring electricity to isolated communities in the state, according to deputy chief minister Jishnu Dev Varma.

The government’s objective is to implement power in as many as 80 villages in the state’s most rural areas, he said.

Dev Varma, who is also the state cabinet’s minister of electricity, stated that during the past 45 years, the government has updated the power distribution system without imposing onerous fees on consumers.

The Tripura government established a separate firm to improve the infrastructure for power generation and maximise potential, the deputy CM added.

It should be noted that the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) has constructed more than 50 electricity sub-stations in the past 1.5 years, assuring lower transmission losses and better power supply to consumers.

However, deputy CM Dev Varma noted that some areas are still out of reach because forests occupy 62% of the state.

He further said that this has encouraged the administration to look into additional unconventional sources of energy for these areas.
