India’s First Monkeypox Patient Recovers, To Be Released Soon from Hospital

Guwahati: The 35-year-old Kollam resident who was the first monkeypox patient in India has recovered from the illness. He will be discharged from the hospital on Saturday.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has deemed the monkeypox outbreak now affecting India a global emergency.

Kerala Health Minister Veena George said, “All samples tested negative twice. Both the patient’s physical and mental health are good. All of the skin pimples have disappeared. He’ll be released today.”

The individual tested positive after travelling from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on July 12. He was admitted to the hospital on July 14 due to monkeypox symptoms.

The two further instances of monkeypox that were found in the state are currently in satisfactory health. The Kerala government has issued many advisories and preventative measures following the discovery of the first three cases in the state.

According to the WHO, monkeypox is a virus that can infect humans when it infects animals. Its symptoms are comparable to those of smallpox; however, they are milder.

The first instance of monkeypox in a human was documented in the year 1970. It has been recorded in a number of Central and Western African nations prior to the epidemic in 2022.

The first three cases of monkeypox in India were discovered in Kerala and were associated with travel; however, a fourth case was discovered in Delhi and was not associated with travel.

On July 23, the World Health Organization (WHO) designated monkeypox as a pandemic-level public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC).
