Police crackdown on protesting students in GU, Several Injured
Guwahati: The situation at Gauhati University (GU) in Assam descended into violence after the police attempted to crack down on university protesting students on Tuesday.
According to reports, today’s rallies on the university campus by students were in response to the July 29 announcement of the results of the degree fifth semester examinations. The students have conducted a peaceful demonstration because they claim that the findings contain different abnormalities.
The police’s attempt to disperse the protesting students by forcibly shoving them into buses and transporting them to police stations, however, caused the demonstration to become tense.
Police have detained numerous protesting students, including Hemen Kalita, president of the university’s Post-Graduate Students’ Union (PGSU).
However, numerous students were injured in the incident, including the president and general secretary of the students’ organisation.
A student who suffered an injury has been sent to the hospital for better treatment.
The incident has been denounced by university students in the interim. They have requested an explanation from the university administration over the abuses of the demonstrators by the police.
The General Secretary of GU, Biki Sarma said, “The Jalukbari Police and the university administration tried to disperse a peaceful protest that was organised by over 500 students against the alleged abnormalities of the fifth semester results. We denounce the police’s barbaric treatment of the kids. We will demonstrate until our demands are met because we want justice.”
