Goroimari’s Residents Still Depends on Coracle to Cross River Kalahi in Assam

Guwahati: Residents of Goroimari in South Kamrup have been risking their lives every day as they attempt to cross the river Kalahi via coracle boat. Students, patients in critical condition and women who are pregnant can only cross the Kalahi River in Goroimari using a coracle boat.

Even though it is extremely difficult for people to cross the river, MLA Rekibuddin Ahmed doesn’t bother to improve local communication.

From the era of Independence, people from Goroimari, Kharidol of South Kamrup has been using a coracle boat as a mode of communication over the Kalahi River.

Moreover, to prevent being swept away by the river’s swift current, the coracle is fastened to a rope that joins both banks. The lack of a raft man to lead passengers from one side of the river to the other is more alarming. Coracle rowing is a solo endeavour.

It is virtually impossible for students and patients in severe condition to arrive at the other bank on time because of this tedious communication, which takes up a great deal of time. Since there isn’t a single bridge or huge ferry that can accommodate an ambulance, this improper communication has so far resulted in a great number of injuries.

Reportedly, the farmers are unable to also ship the corps to the market, they are selling their hard-grown corps for a negotiated price.

However, the villagers urged that the present BJP-led government build a concrete bridge over the Kalahi River for the benefit of Goroimari residents so that after 75 years of Independence, nobody would have to die waiting for adequate medical care or education.
