National Handloom Day: Union Home Minister Amit Shah Urges People To Promote Handloom

Guwahati: Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated on Sunday that India’s handloom industry represents the nation’s rich and varied cultural history.

He asked everyone to celebrate National Handlooms Day by highlighting the nation’s handloom tradition and empowering weavers, particularly women.

“India’s handloom industry symbolises our vast and varied cultural history,” added Shah. To honour the Swadeshi movement, which got its start on August 7 of the same year (1905), and to restore this traditional Indian art form, Prime Minister Narendra Modi proclaimed August 7 as National Handloom Day in 2015.

“Let us work together to strengthen the resolve of the Modi Government to conserve and promote our handloom legacy and empower our handloom weavers, especially women. This was the eighth National Handloom Day,” he continued.

Meanwhile, Assam Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah attending the 8th Nation Handloom Day celebration and Mega Weavers’ Meet 2022-23 organised at Integrated Textile Park, Mushalpur, Baksa said, “Jatir Pita Mahatma Gandhi in his visit to Sualkuchi in 1946 said that “Assamese women weave dreams on their looms.”

National Handloom Day is observed ever year on August 7 since 2015. It is observed to commemorate the Swadeshi Movement.

It is celebrated under the aegis of Ministry of Textiles.
